Introduction to Andy the biology major.

Hello, my name is Andy McDowell and I am a biology major. This is my senior year, and I have been lucky enough to take many interesting classes in my major. I think the coolest thing about being a biology major is the wide variety in classes that you are able to take and the diverse interests of people in your classes. You are able to meet people who will be future doctors and future ecological researchers. My favorite class last semester was genetics. It was challenging, but the problem solving actually became fun and I enjoyed learning the material.

I am a huge sports fan. This has been a great year because my lifelong favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles, finally won their first super bowl championship. I love going to the OU football games. I also make it a point to catch a Philadelphia Phillies baseball game in St. Louis every summer. Sporting events are my favorite way to relax and enjoy time with friends and family.

I have one pet, a golden retriever named Winston. He is unique because he is much lighter in color than most people would imagine when they think of a golden retriever. (In fact, he is almost white). He loves to run around outside and go on walks. I spend most of my time trying to chase him down and prevent him from stealing and chewing on my socks and other things he gets his paws on.

I also love food. In the summer, I spend a ton of time grilling and smoking meats. I have almost perfected a smoked ribs recipe, and I love to make barbecue pulled pork as well. Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies, and eating is probably a close second. My third hobby is exercising, which is a must based on how much I love my first two hobbies.

  1. Your dog looks adorable, Andy! I was thinking of setting up a Padlet where everybody can post pictures of their pets (I have a cat named Possum)... it would be quite a menagerie if we could see everybody's pets all in one place! I'll be sure to include that in the announcements if I get that set up.

Have you decided what career path you might want to follow? If there is a way to make a connection between this class and your biology interests, that would be great! In terms of ecology, for example, India is famous for the Chipko movement in defense of trees, and of course trees are a big part of myth and legend: Chipko movement ... my favorite Indian musicians, Maati Baani, who are based in Mumbai, made a Chipko music video as part of the campaign right now to save the Aarey forest: Chipko Re - Save Aarey Forest

  2. Hi Andrew! The year for the Philadelphia Eagles must have been great to experience as they won the Super Bowl earlier this year. I am a Vikings fan, so my interest in the game was lesser, but it was still entertaining to see if Brady would be able to pull off a comeback again or not. Hope you have a great senior year!

  3. Hey Andrew!

It is very exciting that you are a senior! I am also a senior, so we are coming close to graduating which I am looking forward to. I really like the picture of your dog! I also have a lab his name is Waldo. Reading about smoked meats and BBQ also made me really hungry! Good luck with your semester!

  4. Sup Andy! Dude this is our last year as a Senior. I hope your pumped and not too stressed from school. And dude, you are trippin'. The Philadelphia Eagles cheated on the Super Bowl championship. Nah I'm kidding. And that's awesome that you like to cook. I love to bake and cook too, but I'm actually a little but hurt that you didn't invite me out to your cookouts this summer.

  5. Hey Andy!
I really find it interesting that you love sports so much. I too enjoy sports and find it relaxing to watch them. I can only imagine that you were yelling Fly Eagles Fly when Philly pulled through with the super bowl title. I also find it interesting the diversity of people that you meet with you major and the broad spectrum of what people want to move forward with and focus on with their biology major! Good Luck with classes this semester!

  6. Hey Andy! My name is Deborah, and I’m also a senior. I’m pretty excited to be graduating this year, as well as nervous/anxious. I have also taken genetics, and it was probably my favorite class during my undergrad as well! I’m pre-med so I’m hoping one day I’ll be able to do some research with genetics in the future as a doc. Best of luck this year!

  7. Andy your dog is so cute! I love this lighter colored Golden Retrievers, I have a friend that has one similar in color to yours and she is so sweet. I am also a huge sports fan and love to attend sporting events with my friends and family, it is definitely something fun to do. I also love barbeque so you are speaking my language when it comes to food!

  8. Hi Andy. Winston is so fluffy; golden retrievers are always the softest dogs and they're the best. Your major sounds really interesting and it seems you are enjoying learning about the different things in Biology. Genetics was one of my favorite topics I learned about in high school, though I picked English as my major instead. All that math wasn't for me but I am glad you're sticking with the sciences!

  9. Hi Andy, Winston is so cute. He looks like that kind of dog that would lower your blood pressure just by being in the same room as you. Biology is a great subject and connects so many different disciplines like you were saying. Genetics sounds like a cool class! Ecology is so interesting and important. I am planning to get my masters in ecological engineering. I hope you are enjoying your biology classes this semester! What do you want to do with biology?

  10. Hi Andy!
I took Genetics last semester too! I'd never taken a class with Dr. Thompson, and it was interesting to learn about a topic from a man involved in the field since before genomes were sequenced! And that note about the diversity of bio classes is so spot on- I love the variety of opportunities the university offers and getting to meet such different people too. Winston is too precious- he looks like my cousin's old golden, and the picture cracks me up- it's like he's taking a selfie lol. Congrats to the Phillies! Hopefully OU does well this season! (In the band we're really hoping to make the playoffs again- fingers crossed!). Thanks for sharing, and best of look with this semester!

  11. Hey Andy,

I am Pranali and also a senior! Senior year is great and it comes so fast. I am very nervous to graduate but excited at the same time. Your dog is so adorable!! Sports are so fun to watch and play( even though I am not good). It is a great fun way to exercise for sure. Genetics sounds like a fun and challenging class. Some of my friends too it and said they liked it!

  12. Hi Andy,

I took one introductory biology class, and it was hard! I admire you so much for getting through the hardest major (I think biology is the toughest major). I love your dog Winston. He looks really cute and adorable. We have something in common: I also love food and bbq. I love all the bbq foods like you do: smoked ribs, pulled pork, and brisket, they all make us happy. I’ve never tried grilling or smoking meat though, and I think that’s a hard skill that needs lots of time learning. Thank you for a great post!

  13. Hey Andy!
I liked reading your introduction! I'm also a senior this year and I agree with you on how interesting it is to meet different people in the classes you take. My major is microbiology so it's close to your major. Also, your dog is so cute. I always wanted a golden retriever. Hope you have a good semester and good luck!

  14. Hey there Andy! Thank you for sharing a little piece of who you are with the class! Your dog Winston is so adorable! I have two dogs myself, a yorkie named Jessie, and a bishon frise named Mia. They are old ladies at 12, and 13 years old so I don't have to worry as much about them chewing things up anymore, but I do remember them chewing up my shoes and clothes when they were younger! Goldens are so sweet and he looks like a big teddy bear himself!

  15. Hey Andy! Your dog seems awesome! I can't wait to get one of my own when I graduate. I am a cowboys fan but I LOATHE the patriots. So, I was so psyched when the eagles took them down. Also, its always great to see a team win their first Super Bowl. Hopefully the cowboys get their crap together this season. May the best team win.
