Everyone is very upset about Rama being exiled, and Sita insists
to go with Rama into exile. A chariot is provided and people follow, but Rama escapes
in the night. Dasharatha dies later. Bharata is away and told to return. Upon
returning, he finds out the news that Dasharatha died and Rama was exiled. Bharata
is angry that Rama was exiled and tries to get him to return, but Rama insists
to complete his exile. Rama continues to move deeper into the forest for his
exile and to escape the crowds. Later, Rama meets a beautiful woman who was
rejected being a demon because she wants to marry Rama. She tries to get rid of
Sita, but she is captured in the plot and mutilated. She has others seek
revenge and Rama defeats them. Later Ravana falls in love with Sita and comes
up with a plot to capture her.
Again, there were
some interesting side stories in this reading that would be excellent possible
options for stories. One that caught my eye was the story of Ravana’s sister. A
story could be told with a modern rendition of two women feuding over a man,
and one tries to get rid of the rival but is exposed. This general plotline
could be very interesting to write about with different characters and even a
different ending. I could leave out the mutilation part and try to put in a
theme about not trying to ruin a relationship between two people. There are
many directions that a story such as this could be taken. Another interesting
tale was Ravana falling in love with Sita and plotting to capture her. This story
could be changed with different characters into the story of a man who goes to
extravagant lengths to express his interest in a woman. By drawing on just a
few pieces of stories such as this, there are many directions that a tale could
go.
